At a time when we all should celebrate our independence and enjoy the freedoms of living in America, my mind is filled with fear. I have not felt such a fear for our nation since my Freshman year in college when 9/11 hit our country. The difference is that terrorists attacked 14 years ago, and though there is a threat of ISIS looming over us we have become our own worst enemies. Everyone seems filled with hate and rage toward one another.
We can all rest assure that God is still in control. No matter how bad it seems, He has a divine plan. We can be a part of that plan by praying and loving one another.
Our nation is called “United” States, yet states, cities and individuals are all divided over personal convictions and preferences. It’s like a wrestling match with Republican vs. Democrat, Conservative vs. Liberal, and Christian vs. Non-Christian. I have opinions as well, because of course I am human. When asked, I gladly share my beliefs. But I don’t picket and yell obscenities. Instead I pray, love and VOTE. If everyone used prayer, love and voting as his or her defense, our country would have never gotten to the place it is now.
It’s also important to pray for not only your family and those who share your same convictions, but also those of opposing opinions. I am personally not a fan of President Obama, but even the Bible instructs us to pray for everyone in authority. “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” 1 Timothy 2:1-4 (NIV).
As a mom to a young son, with a daughter on the way, I can’t help but worry. It’s terribly hard in a world where every news channel and Internet sight, including social media, is bombarded daily with hatred. Yet, we can all rest assure that God is still in control. No matter how bad it seems, He has a divine plan. We can be a part of that plan by praying and loving one another.
