Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why do you write?
Short answer:
It’s my only talent other than cheerleading, which obviously isn’t a career option for someone pushing forty who has screws in her back!
Long answer:
Seriously, it’s the only subject in school where I didn’t have to “try.” Ever since I can remember, I’ve kept a journal or diary and made up stories for my family.
Writing comes naturally to me. Unlike a lot of my friends, I made better grades the further I went in school since my degree is in Communications. I majored in Journalism and have a double minor in English and Creative Writing.
I worked as an editor for several years, then as a freelance writer and graphic designer. However, I always daydreamed about writing fiction, since my brain contains a hampster wheel spinning with neverending ideas. (Which explains why I get so little sleep and rely on caffeine to adult!)

Where do you get your ideas?
Short answer:
Everyday life
Long answer:
I’m very observant and have a good memory. I also find the funny in everyday life. About a year ago I started keeping small notepads in my car and purse to write key details when I came across a “funny.” This could be something someone said or did or something I might hear or see in the media. Life is filled with endless material for romcoms!
My friends also give me ideas. On a recent girl’s trip, I filled up about six pages of notes during a three-hour drive from stories they told me. When I first started writing, I was afraid to put something in a story that happened to other people. However, I’ve learned that people enjoy finding their funnies in my book. Friends will text me all the time with “Hey, here’s something that should go in a book.” Even those who don’t read love to share ideas.
Disclaimer: I do change the details enough so that the real-life people and events are safe.

Do you speak or at events?
Short answer:
It depends
Long answer:
This is not something I seek out. Although I’ve extremely extroverted, I feel there are plenty of authors and speakers more experienced than me.
I have been invited to a few local events recently to talk about my books, which I enjoyed attending. If I have enough notice, I can also bring paperback copies that attendees can purchase, which I’m more than happy to sign.
I’ve also given my testimony in the past, which I’m happy to do if asked. I believe we all have a story to tell that can help others.

What can I expect from a Kaci Lane book?
Short answer:
Like my tagline implies, I write books that are sweet, southern and sarcastic in nature.
Long answer:
I write what I want to read. I’m a Christian, and although my character archs don’t focus on spiritual matters, I write from a Christian worldview. That means my main characters often pray, go to church, and live by Biblical standards. That offends some people and isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and I understand that. However, that means although my books aren’t strong enough in emphasis to call Christian romance, they are written about mostly Christian characters and can be called inspirational. All my books are also labeled SWEET and have a mild intimacy level. Even if harder topics such as infidelity are addressed, nothing is shown on the page.
I’m also a life-long southerner, having lived in Alabama my entire life, mostly rural. The stories and antics in my novels all stem from real-life events. As my husband often says, “real life is better than fiction.” At least, it is around our house. But it’s my mission to share a little SOUTHERN culture with the world. Some people love this and others think we’re strange. We are, and I understand if you don’t care to read about hunting, mudding, and nosy old people.
And I’m very SARCASTIC. The two books I’ve written that are not comedies have reviews saying how funny they are or how the readers enjoyed witty banter. Honestly, it’s easier for me to write comedy, as I had to hold back on those to make them more serious.
Pretty much, I enjoy stories that have all the feelings without the smut, don’t compromise my beliefs, and make me laugh out loud. If that’s what you’re looking for, I’m your girl!

Do you use ARC or Beta readers?
I do not use beta readers at this time, as I have settled into a nice routine of drafts and editing.
I do have an ARC team, who are phenomenal in helping me launch a book! I love it when they also point out any typos that may have slipped through the cracks.
If you are an avid reader and reviewer, especially if you’ve read my books or books similar to mine before, and you post bookish content on social media, I encourage you to fill out the form for my ARC Street Team.
If you have a blog or large reader following on Instagram, please indicate that as well, since I try to send out limited paperback copies to some reviewers.
